La Familia Verde

The Father of los Verdes in Belize
Francisco Verde is considered to be the father of the Verde family in Belize. Francisco was a Spanish Conquistador who arrived in Tulum; Quintana Roo, in the early 1800s. Francisco was believed to be from a very wealthy family probably the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa (Cape Verde is the capital of the Spanish islands). Francisco joined the many expeditions to the new world and eventually reached Tulum where he found his two wives; Paulina and Maria (both Maya). Despite having two wives, he only had one son with Paulina named Juan Verde.  Soon after his arrival a war broke out and forced Francisco to run away along with his family. The Caste War of Yucatan as we know today forced Francisco to leave his new adopted homeland in search of another. On their way to safety (British Honduras) Francisco found a little boy named Cristobal Gutierrez abandoned in the forest. Francisco took Cristobal with him and made him his son. Cristobal was adopted and was given a new surname; Verde.  Francisco Verde arrived in the island of Ambergris Caye around 1848 and founded the village of San Pedro.

The fathers of Los Verdes in Sarteneja…
Years later Juan and his brother Cristobal Verde joined Primitivo Aragon in Sarteneja. Cristobal Verde married Adela Carillo from Sarteneja shortly after his arrival. Cristobal and Adela created a family of 5 sons and 3 daughters. Natividad(Native), Faustino (Tino), Filemon (Monchi), Evaristo(Varich), and Saltasion (Saltas) Verde were their sons.  Pastora (Pasi), Petronila (Peti) and Leonilda (Nides) Verde were their daughters. These brothers and sisters married to their spouses and became the most dominant family in the community. On the other hand Juan Verde married his wife Fransisca and created a family of two sons; George Verde and Francisco Verde.
Today the Verde family is distinguished and recognized by their looks, tradition and way of life. Some Verdes are strong in character just like Tia Pasi, or Tio Native, others have exceeded and have become like Tio Saltas.  Most of the Verdes are passive and humble people like Tio Barich.

The family is known to have a private cemetery just for the Verdes. Today a street is named after the biggest family in the community; Verde Street.
